![]() Okay, so what’s an anticapitalist writer to do? We’re trying to disturb, or subvert, or illuminate, or render a literary experience so vibratingly transcendent that it resonates inside a reader long after the last page. My guess is that most writers (or perhaps the ones reading Lit Hub) are not working toward the goal of customer satisfaction. Resonance is a way to talk about the music of a work of fiction, as well as the multitude of ways a piece might impact a reader. She’s more interested in pursuing endings with “resonance.” This feels like a better framework to me as well. Moniz, who pointed out that this language smacks of consumer capitalism. Do we really want a story to satisfy? To earn? Recently, I sat on a panel with Dantiel W. To start, maybe turn a critical eye upon those critiques themselves. The first: “This ending wasn’t satisfying.” And the second: “This ending wasn’t earned.” In other words: either a story’s ending was a letdown-given what the story seemed to promise-or the big swings taken by a story’s ending are not justified by what happens earlier. What’s more, those critiques tend to fall into one of two categories. Sure, there are outliers-Toni Morrison purportedly said: “I always know the ending that’s where I start”-but for many of us, finding that conclusive beat is slippery, maddening, even disastrous.Īs a writer and teacher of fiction, I can attest that few fiction workshops pass without the utterance of an ending-related critique. For writers working in all mediums, ending a work can be the most challenging aspect of the writing process. “Beginnings are definitely the most exciting, middles are perplexing and endings are a disaster.” ![]() ![]() Just detest them,” said Sam Shepard in an interview with The Paris Review. ![]() Ten years after its release, “Dreams and Nightmares” still gets just about any crowd hype. The song is a survival story that not only puts Meek Mill’s life on wax, but also speaks to the harrowing times that gave the track its vibrancy. But the selling point of “Dreams and Nightmares” is the story of its creation. Meek Mill’s signature has always been his own twist on the art of storytelling. In a genre with no shortage of underdog stories, Meek Mill’s “ Dreams and Nightmares” stands out. Dreams and Nightmares is the type of thing rap will always need, even when it's in flawed form*.Hip Hop at 50 is our yearlong look at the people, sound, art, and impact of hip-hop culture on the world. Whether he can maintain or strengthen that in the future is an open question, but this is music that immediately hits emotionally and physically while lingering in your thoughts long after you turn it off. Still, Meek has made the move from mixtapes to the majors with a solid vision. Some songs that appear earlier on the album ("Maybach Curtains", "Young Kings") borrow the orchestral bloat of Rick Ross, and could've been replaced by up-tempo bangers à la "House Party" or "Burn" on which Meek has made his name. Blige, marks the point where the album becomes syrupy and maudlin. 2" is the follow-up to the stunning storytelling track from Dreamchasers, but this version lacks its precision and is bogged down by a chintzy Boi-1da beat. Unfortunately, the album loses steam with a quarter of the way to go. Where some rappers coast, Meek's mere existence feels earned. ![]() It extends to "Traumatized", a track where Meek addresses his father's killer while illustrating exactly how treacherous his upbringing was for him and those around him. He is as much a truth-teller as lyricist, and this singular viewpoint and delivery have both been carried over from his mixtapes. Struggle and triumph, are palpable and plainly articulated in his music, and it makes the best of Dreams and Nightmares (including "In God We Trust" and "Believe It") feel eminently vital. Sneering talking heads and confused elitists use that struggle as a weapon against the music: How can this music, and these artists, be taken seriously when they brag about throwing money at strippers? The genius of Meek's music is that he embodies, fleshes out, and answers the rapper's dilemma. Rap is often about contradiction, of wanting to stay humble and true while still stunting. It's a track that best distills Meek's singularity hurt oozes from his voice and words, illustrating rap's literal and spiritual roots. On the opening title track, he raps unabated for nearly four minutes, tracing lines from his come-up in Philly to strip clubs in Miami and back, over a beat that morphs into menace halfway through. His music channels pain, anger, empathy, and glee into a wave that hits immediately and forcefully, especially on the album's first two songs. It is tense and dramatic, with variations of piano constituting the bedrock of the album and Meek rapping passionately even by his own standards. ![]() After navigating that push-pull, Meek Mill has emerged with an album that is distinct in both voice and sound and also plays to his strengths. So maybe Dreams and Nightmares is something to celebrate, even though it's imperfect. But this is still a thin line for artists to walk, one so difficult that good-to-great major label rap debuts now feel like a minor miracle. ![]() Waka Flocka Flame was smart enough to capitalize on his timing simply by turning a proposed mixtape into a debut album, and, most recently, Kendrick Lamar used his unwavering artistic vision to essentially subvert this game entirely. Cole have made better, more accessible versions of the early songs that first got them buzz, and Nicki Minaj plays both sides of the field. ![]() In January 1888, a petition supporting the incorporation of Compton was forwarded to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, who in turn forwarded the petition to the State Legislature. Compton donated his land to incorporate and create the city of Compton in 1889, but he did stipulate that a certain acreage be zoned solely for agriculture and named Richland Farms. A series of town meetings were held to discuss incorporation of their little town. ![]() īy 1887, the settlers realized it was time to make improvements to the local government. Many in the Compton party wanted to relocate to a friendlier climate and settle down, but as there were two general stores within traveling distance-one in the pueblo of Los Angeles, the other in Wilmington-they eventually decided to stay put. To gather firewood it was necessary to travel to mountains close to Pasadena. The weather continued to be harsh, rainy and cold, and fuel was difficult to find. Compton's earliest settlers were faced with terrible hardships as they farmed the land in bleak weather to get by with just the barest subsistence. However, to avoid confusion with the Camptonville located in Yuba County, the name was shortened to Compton. Originally named Gibsonville, after one of the tract owners, it was later called Comptonville. These families had traveled by wagon train south from Stockton, California, in search of ways to earn a living other than the rapid exhaustion of gold fields. In 1867, Griffith Dickenson Compton led a group of 30 pioneers to the area. The tree that marked the original northern boundary of the rancho still stands at the corner of Poppy and Short streets. The Domínguez family name is still applied throughout the area, including the Dominguez Rancho Adobe historical landmark, in the unincorporated community of Rancho Dominguez, located between the cities of Compton, Long Beach and Carson. Domínguez's descendants partitioned the land amongst family members, sold parcels to newly arriving settlers, and relinquished some when validating their legal claim with the Mexican government at 48,000 acres (190 km 2) in 1828, and with the United States government through a patent validating 43,119 acres (174.50 km 2) in 1858. In 1784, the Spanish Crown deeded Rancho San Pedro, a tract of over 75,000 acres (300 km 2), to soldier Juan José Domínguez. In 1767, the area became part of the Province of the Californias ( Spanish: Provincia de las Californias), and the area was explored by the Portolá expedition in 1769–1770. The Spanish Empire had expanded into this area when the Viceroy of New Spain commissioned Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo to explore the Pacific Ocean in 1542–1543. Vacuum tubes were also inefficient and fragile compared to transistors and had a limited lifetime.īell Laboratories demonstrated the first transistor on December 23, 1947. The need for a low voltage high current source to power the filaments of the tubes and high voltage for the anode potential typically required two batteries. Although portable vacuum tube radios were produced, they were typically bulky and heavy. A transistor is a semiconductor device that amplifies and acts as an electronic switch.īackground A seven-transistor Soviet Orljonok radio with the back open, showing parts.īefore the transistor was invented, radios used vacuum tubes. Beginning around 1980, however, cheap AM transistor radios were superseded initially by the boombox and the Sony Walkman, and later on by digitally-based devices with higher audio quality such as portable CD players, personal audio players, MP3 players and (eventually) by smartphones, many of which contain FM radios. The pocket size of transistor radios sparked a change in popular music listening habits, allowing people to listen to music anywhere they went. Billions of transistor radios are estimated to have been sold worldwide between the 1950s and 2012. Transistor radios are still commonly used as car radios. The mass-market success of the smaller and cheaper Sony TR-63, released in 1957, led to the transistor radio becoming the most popular electronic communication device of the 1960s and 1970s. Following the invention of the transistor in 1947-which revolutionized the field of consumer electronics by introducing small but powerful, convenient hand-held devices-the Regency TR-1 was released in 1954 becoming the first commercial transistor radio. First off let’s get an appliance deployed. Now we’ve got that part over, I want to dive into the configuring of scans and looking at the outputs! (The fun stuff!). Treating this as “just a scan” is a sure-fire way to not enable business value from these activities. Once you have the outputs they need to be understood, contextualised and they need to feed into risk management, vulnerability management, patch management etc. Outside of scanning isn’t that simple to start with, you also need to realise vulnerability identification is just one part of vulnerability management. Just please, please don’t think “it’s just a scan”, this isn’t like you click one button and the job is done. I’m not going to go into detail on all these areas, hopefully it’s obvious but if not shout at me online and I’ll write more about this part.
